On the Republic Day, just as the weather did not deter the spirits of Prime Minister Modi and US President Barack Obama and thousands of Indians who came to see the Republic Day parade, the spirits of our little soldiers from jhuggis ( slum areas) remained high! Our soldiers were an exuberant bunch, eager to learn and eager to share!
Our theme for the Republic Day celebration was “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” – a campaign launched by Prime Minister Modi on the 22nd of this month. We informed these children of their rights, various programs and campaigns launched by the government for their welfare and spoke to them about the importance of studying. After a long and emotion-filled chat with them, we came to know that many kids even at the age of ten do not know how to write and some of them are forced to work at home and thus are unable to attend school. We concluded our celebration by singing our national anthem and made these soldiers promise that from today they will attend school and say no to child labor! We all also decided to teach these children every Wednesday and Saturday!
The story of these children is the story of this nation. It is our responsibility to help them and make a change. Lets all contribute to this cause in whichever way we can!
