Women Empowerment
“Skills, Opportunity & Independence”
Selflessly Yours believes that empowerment begins with opportunity, the opportunity to learn a skill, build confidence and have the means to become more financially independent. The Women Empowerment Programme was created with this in mind, supporting semi-skilled homemakers by connecting vocational training with an opportunity to work and earn.
Launched in April 2016, the programme is a partnership between Selflessly Yours and Mathili Jain Nath’s CSR initiative. It focuses on supporting semi-skilled homemakers in their endeavour to become financially self-sufficient and independent by developing practical skills that can create opportunities for employment.
The programme provides vocational training in embroidery, giving participants the opportunity to learn and develop a practical skill that can be used professionally. The training is connected to an avenue for employment, with participants having the opportunity to undertake embroidery work for Mathili Nath’s designer house.
This connection between training and employment is an important part of the programme. Rather than focusing only on learning a new skill, the initiative seeks to create a pathway through which women can apply that skill and earn through their work. For homemakers who may have had limited opportunities to participate in paid employment, developing a vocational skill and having an opportunity to use it professionally can be an important step towards greater financial independence.
Alongside the vocational training, the programme also includes basic English classes. These classes are intended to help participants develop foundational communication skills and greater confidence in using English in everyday situations.
What the Women Empowerment Programme aims to achieve
The Women Empowerment Programme focuses on creating practical opportunities for women to develop skills and participate more independently in economic activity. It aims to:
• Provide semi-skilled homemakers with vocational training in embroidery.
• Develop a practical skill that can be used to pursue income-generating work.
• Create an avenue through which participants can apply their embroidery skills professionally.
• Connect vocational training with an opportunity for employment through Mathili Nath’s designer house.
• Support women in their endeavour to become more financially self-sufficient and independent.
• Develop basic English and communication skills.
• Build confidence through learning, practice and participation.
• Create greater awareness of the possibilities available through vocational skills and employment.
How the programme works
Participants undertake vocational training in embroidery and develop their skills through practical work. Following their training, there is an opportunity to undertake embroidery work for Mathili Nath’s designer house, allowing participants to put their skills into practice.
The programme also incorporates English classes, giving participants an opportunity to strengthen their communication skills alongside their vocational training.
The partnership with Mathili Jain Nath’s CSR initiative allows Selflessly Yours to connect its work in community development with a practical employment opportunity. The focus is on creating a pathway from learning a skill to having the opportunity to use that skill productively.
The programme reflects Selflessly Yours’ broader belief that meaningful empowerment is strengthened when individuals have access not only to education and training, but also to opportunities through which they can apply what they have learned.
By bringing together vocational training, employment and basic communication skills, the Women Empowerment Programme seeks to give semi-skilled homemakers practical tools that can support greater confidence, economic participation and independence.
At its heart, the programme is about creating an opportunity for women to learn a skill, put that skill to work and take a step towards greater financial self-sufficiency.
