The Selflessly Yours Bangalore Team notched up yet another unique experience in helping your women in rural Karnataka by being part of an Early Cancer Screening camp for Oral, Breast and Cervical cancer.
The activities that we participated in were door to door campaigning, explaining the process to volunteers and putting the young women who were undergoing the screening at ease.
Our learning from this experience was very different and challenging, the first being door to door campaigning in order to mobilize participation of maximum number of women.
Speaking to them about early detection of cancer and urging them to come to the location and be part of the screening camp was an uphill task. However, we got better at it, got more convincing and did manage to coax some young women to undergo the cancer screening exam.
The second most challenging task was to use the local language to explain to them about the procedure they were going to undergo. We had to make them aware of the procedure and yet put them an ease about a breast exam and a pap smear.
All in all, this activity made us push ourselves out of our comfort zones and take a stride ahead in working with underprivileged teens and young women in the medical domain.
